This is a PSS exclusive clinic about motorcycle suspension theory and tuning designed for the everyday rider. Information is presented in an easy to understand format void of complex mathematical formulas and engineering jargon.

Whether you are seeking to become a safer rider, faster rider, or just want to understand and get the best ride your bike can this is one of the best investments you can make. The classroom will incorporate discussion on theory with demonstrations including dissecting what’s inside a fork or shock using cutaways and real components.

There will be two workshops providing hands on suspension tuning on your personal bike. Even if your bike does not have adjustable suspension you will learn to determine your base line so you know what you have and what you can do to get the most out of it.

I'm not a racer. Why does this matter to me?

Racing requires precision of suspension:

  • to maintain a competitive edge and to ride faster with less risk

Street riding requires precision of suspension:

  • to handle different loads (saddle bags, passengers, heavier/lighter riders)
  • to handle the changing road surface (bumps, dips, etc.)
  • to handle the changing traction (concrete, asphalt, wet, dry, etc.)
  • to handle quick maneuvers for hazard avoidance (swerving, emergency stop, etc.)

The street is far more demanding on your motorcycle's suspension than on a race track (except maybe the Isle of Man TT).

The majority of factory motorcycles are setup for the suspension to correctly handle a single rider (approximately 150 lbs, 5ft 7in), no cargo, no passenger. The further outside that standard you are the far more important it is to understand and correctly adjust the components you have available.

What are some of the topics covered?

  • Suspension theory
  • Springs
  • Sprung & un-sprung weight
  • Stiction, suspension fluids, seals, and friction coatings
  • Understanding and setting sag (Workshop)
  • Valving
  • Damping
  • Setting compression and rebound (Workshop)
  • Suspension maintenance
  • Suspension improvements

What kinds of things will I get to adjust on my suspension?

That depends on the type of external adjustments available on your personal bike. Some motorcycles have different types of external adjustment (preload, rebound, compression).

The two workshops included with each clinic are utilized to measure sag, calculate the correct sag needed for setup (a combination of rider, bike, additional weight and riding style) and determine what needs to be done to obtain it. You will also have the opportunity to make adjustments to compression and rebound as needed.

How long are the Suspension Clinics?

They are scheduled for about 5 hours of time and designed to fit the needs of the riders in attendance. The time scheduled includes the two hands-on workshops for measuring and setting up personal bikes.

Where are the Suspension Clinics?

PSS utilizes different locations, be sure to check the schedule for the location nearest you.
